Surface Preparation

What grit should I sand raw wood to before applying?

Sand raw wood up to 180 or 220 grit for a traditional satin finish, or up to 320+ grit if higher surface sheen is desired.

Can this finish be applied over stains, dyes, or a previous finish?

Hard wax oils can be safely applied over raw wood, oil based stains and dyes, and common aniline wood dyes without issue. It is not recommended to use over an existing film forming finish without sanding to bare wood.

What is the minimum temperature for applying this finish?

We recommend applying and curing the finish at a minimum temperature of 55°F (13°C) with good airflow.

Application and Drying

How do I apply the finish?

Full instructions are available at www.blueridgefinishes.com/finishguide

How many coats are required?

2 coats provide the best protection. Two coats provide adequate protection for use on furniture. A third coat can be buffed in, if desired, but is largely a waste of finish.

Do I need to sand between coats?

Yes! A light pass with 400-600 grit sandpaper after the previous coat has dried for 24 hours.

Why? This helps the finish grab onto the previous coat and ensures consistent dry times.

How do I know when the first coat is dry enough to sand or recoat?

Light sanding should produce a fine white dust; if the paper gums up or smears, allow for additional dry time before applying the next coat.

What should I do if the finish feels sticky or tacky after 24 hours?

Lightly sand or scuff the surface to remove the uncured resin layer, wipe away all dust, and reapply a very thin coat of fresh finish.

How much area does one pint cover?

One pint covers approximately 200–300 square feet for a single coat on raw hardwood, depending on wood species and surface porosity.

Is this DIY friendly?

Absolutley! This is far more friendly and forgiving to use than hardware store polyurethane. Follow the application guide and you'll find that this wipe-on and wipe-off finish is an easy and effective way to protect your wooden surfaces.

Is this finish suitable for a professional shop?

This finish was made by a professional furniture builder for professional shop use. It delivers consistent results with fewer coats needed thanks to the ultra high solids content.

Check the finish guide to see if this is right for your workflow.

Care, Repair, Storage, and Safety

How do I care for surfaces finished with Hard Wax Oil?

HWO surfaces are durable but benefit from routine care:

  • Clean with a soft, damp cloth; avoid harsh detergents.

  • Wipe up spills promptly.

  • Reapply a thin maintenance coat as needed for high-use surfaces. Standard dry and cure times still apply for fresh coats.

Can I repair scratches or worn areas?

Yes! New coats blend easily.

  • For worn areas, lightly sand with 400-600 grit sandpaper and apply a fresh coat of finish to the area.
  • Light scratches can often be buffed out with a soft cloth or revived with a fresh coat of finish.
  • For deeper scratches, sand the area around the scratch with 220-grit sandpaper to remove. Then apply a fresh finish to that repair area. Multiple coats may be needed to match the surrounding finish.

How should I store unused finish?

Store in a cool, dry place away from heat or flame. Keep containers tightly sealed.

How should I safely dispose of used rags and applicators?

Rags used with oil-based finishes can spontaneously combust if left bunched. Spread them flat to dry, or store in a metal container with water until disposal. Once fully dry or soaked, discard according to local regulations.

Is this a food safe finish?

This finish is not intended for direct food-contact surfaces. While made from naturally derived ingredients, it has not been tested or certified for food-contact use and is formulated for durability and protection.

Is this finish natural?

This finish is primarily naturally derived using plant-based oils and waxes. This is also why it achieves an ultra low VOC with just <150g/L.
