Hard Wax Oil Finishing Guide:

Our hard wax oils are made from all-natural ingredients and designed to enhance the natural beauty of your wood while providing lasting protection. This guide will help you achieve professional results every time, whether you’re finishing a small craft project or larger furniture.

Wood Preparation

Start by sanding your wood with an orbital sander for the most consistent results. Progress through grits in order: 80 β†’ 120 β†’ 180 β†’ 220. This gradual sanding removes scratches caused by previous grits and prepares the surface for a smooth, flawless finish.

Use raking lightβ€”shine a light across the surface at a low angleβ€”to highlight scratches or uneven areas. This helps you catch imperfections before applying the finish.

Proper preparation ensures your hard wax oil applies evenly and enhances the wood’s natural beauty.

Easy application!

First coat Application

1. Stir thoroughly before use. Do not shake.

2. Apply a thin, even coat with a lint-free cloth. Work in manageable sections, applying enough finish to wet the surface without leaving a heavy film.

3. Allow the finish to penetrate for several minutes.

4. Wipe off all excess with a clean cloth or white non-woven pad. The goal is to leave the surface evenly coated without any standing or visibly wet finish remaining.

Allow the surface to dry to the touch for a minimum of 24 hours before applying the next coat. Drying time can vary with temperature, humidity, wood species, and application thickness.

After 24 hours

Second Coat Application

Typical dry time is 24 hours, but humidity, temperature, and application thickness can extend drying time.

Lightly sand the surface with 400–600 grit sandpaper or a fine sanding pad, using light pressure and sanding with the grain. The surface is ready when sanding produces a fine, white, chalky dust. If the finish gums up the abrasive or appears oily, allow more drying time before continuing.

Apply the Second Coat

The second coat should be applied very sparingly. Most of the finish needed to protect the wood is already in place, so the goal is to add a thin, even layer rather than build a heavy film.

1. Stir thoroughly before use β€” do not shake.

2. Apply a very small amount of finish to a clean lint-free cloth or a clean white non-woven pad. Buff the finish evenly into the surface, working in manageable sections.

3. Wipe off all excess with a completely clean, lint-free cloth. Continue wiping until no standing wet finish remains on the surface.

The finished surface should be smooth, even, and free of visible excess finish.

Dry Time and Handling

Drying & Curing

Drying and curing occur in stages. The surface may feel dry well before the finish has fully hardened beneath the surface.

The timeline below begins after the final coat. If you apply a second coat, the curing timeline starts over from that coat.

24–48 hours β€” Beginning Cure
The finish has dried sufficiently for careful handling, but the surface is still developing hardness.

3–5 days β€” Light Use
The finish has developed additional hardness and can handle light, normal use. Avoid heavy wear during this stage.

7–14 days β€” Normal Use
The finish has developed substantial hardness and is ready for normal use. It will continue to cure and harden naturally over the following weeks.

Note: Dry times are based on approximately 70Β°F (21Β°C) and 50% relative humidity. Cooler temperatures, higher humidity, heavier application, or limited airflow will extend drying and curing times.
